In September of 2019, our Executive Director Chris Spahr, was featured in a short documentary entitled “Changing the Narrative” produced by Wren Rene and released by Drexel University’s Lindy Institute for Urban Innovation. In this video, Chris and his colleagues highlight the importance of community engagement that works to build upon the knowledge and expertise that results from the lived experience within communities.
The Lindy Institute for Urban Innovation at Drexel University created the Urban Innovation Fellowship in 2017 to recognize extraordinary emerging Philadelphia leaders tackling the city’s most critical issues. Emergency Physician Priya Mammen, trauma specialist Michael O’Bryan, and Parkside CDC Executive Director Chris Spahr were selected and benefited from the mentorship of the late Jeremy Nowak and the the intellectual resources from Drexel’s 15 schools and colleges. The Lindy Institute invited documentarian Wren Rene to follow their work and tell the story of how they are challenging convention to engage their communities to change the current narrative and co-create and share innovative practices.
